Used car commerce platform Carvana has opened its latest automated car vending machine in San Antonio, Texas, US.

Claimed to be the fourth of its kind in the country, Carvana’s San Antonio car vending machine introduces a unique pick-up experience for customers purchasing a car online.

This launch represents the third car vending machine in Texas, after Austin and Houston.

At eight storeys tall, the glass tower is similar to its Houston counterpart in size.

The San Antonio car vending machine comprises four delivery bays and holds up to 30 cars.

“We can’t wait to deepen our ties within the San Antonio community through this launch and make customers’ experiences even more memorable.”

Vehicles that have been purchased from the company’s website are loaded into the tower in advance of the customer’s pick-up date.

Carvana's on-site customer advocates help facilitate a personalised pick-up experience.

Carvana founder and CEO Ernie Garcia said: “We’ve been offering our free delivery services in the San Antonio market for almost a year and a half now, and reception to the Carvana car buying experience has been great.

“We are always looking for the next city to offer our car vending machine pick-up experience to, and with the high adoption rate of the new way to buy a car in San Antonio, it made sense to offer the unique pick-up experience here next.

“We can’t wait to deepen our ties within the San Antonio community through this launch and make customers’ experiences even more memorable.”

Carvana’s online site has more than 8,000 vehicles. Customers can buy and secure finance for the purchase.

Once the purchase is complete, customers living within 100 miles of the San Antonio metropolitan area can opt to receive next-day delivery service, or opt to collect their vehicle from one of Carvana’s car vending machines.

When customers arrive at the car vending machine, they receive an oversized Carvana coin to drop into the coin slot, which activates the vending process.

The purchased car is retrieved from the tower and is robotically moved into the delivery bay on an automated track where the customer can take possession.

Customers have seven days to test own the car to ensure it meets all expectations. If they are not satisfied, they can return the car for a refund.
