Sweden-based home furnishings retailer IKEA is planning to install solar panels on its new distribution centre in Joliet, Illinois, US.

Installation will commence and be complete by the end of next year.

With the inclusion of the new solar rooftop, IKEA is said to currently own three of the state’s largest solar rooftop installations.

"Installing Illinois’ largest rooftop array advances our vision of creating a better everyday life for the many.”

Currently under construction, the Joliet distribution centre will feature a 470,545ft² solar array that includes a 2.91MW system with 8,966 panels.

The installation will annually generate around 3,411,600kWh of electricity, which is equivalent to decreasing 2,398t of carbon dioxide.

IKEA has chosen SoCore Energy to develop, design and install the new solar array.

IKEA US president Lars Peterson said: “Installing Illinois’ largest rooftop array advances our vision of creating a better everyday life for the many.”

Being built by Gray Construction, the 72-acre distribution centre will receive and store goods sold at IKEA stores, as well as support the IKEA distribution network.

The company is also planning to build another distribution facility on 62 acres.
