Online grocer Rohlik expands into Rhine-Main area in Germany

Knuspr.de aims to dominate Germany's growing e-grocery market by holding a 30% market share.

Czech online grocery delivery firm Rohlik Group has expanded its German business, Knuspr.de, by launching in Germany’s Rhine-Main Metropolitan Region.

The company has begun taking orders from customers in and around Frankfurt, Mainz, Wiesbaden and Darmstadt.

Customers in these areas can choose from around 9,000 products, with roughly 30% of these products being sourced from local butchers, bakeries and wineries.

Launched in Munich last year, Knuspr.de delivers fresh food directly to customers’ homes within three hours.

The business currently serves 40,000 customers, fulfilling more than 3,000 deliveries a day.

It aims to achieve a turnover of €1.2bn ($1.36bn) in 2024 and dominate Germany’s growing e-grocery market by holding a 30% market share.

Over the next two years, Knuspr.de plans to expand to Hamburg and Cologne among other cities.

The company aims to reach around 30 million customers in Germany by 2025.

Knuspr.de CEO Erich Čomor said: “Many consumers want more regional and sustainably produced food but are constantly disappointed by the long-established supermarket giants.

“We are delivering this offer and want to improve the lives of our customers in the long term by providing uncomplicated access to fantastic food.

“At the same time, we are opening up the opportunity for local producers and farmers, who are under pressure from bricks-and-mortar grocery retailers, to reach an even wider customer base again with their products.

“We are pleased to be able to offer customers in the Rhine-Main region freshness and product variety in the future along with great service.

“At the same time, we look forward to working closely with local producers and farmers.”

In addition to Germany, Rohlik also operates in the Czech Republic, Hungary and Austria.

The company plans to launch in Romania, Italy and Spain this year under its Sezamo brand.

It reported a turnover of more than €300m in 2020 and achieved unicorn status last year.
