Computer vision technology company Trigo Vision has unveiled an AI-driven loss prevention solution to address the escalating issues of retail theft and inventory shrinkage. The issue incurs losses exceeding $130bn annually.

The technology has already been implemented by retailers such as Tesco in the UK and REWE in Germany at their autonomous stores. It offers a capital expenditure-free approach to curbing retail loss.

The newly launched solution compares each scanned item against what the shopper picks up, detecting any discrepancies in real time.

Alerts are triggered at checkout when an item is taken but not scanned, ensuring a balance between loss prevention and maintaining a frictionless shopping experience without compromising customer privacy.

The AI technology operates as a “brain” to the “eyes” of existing CCTV cameras, tracking shoppers as anonymised entities and identifying items picked up, especially from high-theft areas.

The system addresses a major blind spot in traditional systems by detecting concealed items in-store before the shopper reaches the tills.
