Amazon is expanding its rapid delivery offering in the US, introducing one-hour and three-hour shipping in a growing number of locations.

The company said customers in multiple cities and towns can now receive selected items within hours, as part of an extended Same-Day Delivery proposition.

The rollout includes major metropolitan areas such as Los Angeles, Chicago and Washington, DC, alongside smaller markets such as Des Moines, Boise and American Fork.

More than 90,000 products are available for delivery within three hours or less.

The range covers everyday essentials such as paper goods, health and beauty products, and over-the-counter medications, as well as categories that include electronics, toys, clothing and home goods.

The one-hour delivery service is currently available in hundreds of locations while the three-hour option has been extended to more than 2,000 cities and towns.

The shorter delivery window is concentrated in parts of larger urban areas, whereas the three-hour service reaches a wider mix of suburban and smaller markets such as Cornwall, Harrah and Arabi.

Eligible items are incorporated into Amazon’s existing Same-Day shopping interface.

Amazon worldwide operations senior vice-president Udit Madan said: “We saw an opportunity to use our unique operational expertise and delivery network to help make customers’ lives a little easier while unlocking even more value for Prime members.”

A dedicated storefront page has also been launched in regions where the services operate.

The initiative builds on Amazon’s Same-Day Delivery network, which now serves more than 9,000 locations across the US since its introduction in 2015.

The company said the faster delivery speeds are supported by its fulfilment infrastructure and predictive inventory systems designed to optimise order handling and dispatch.

The new services add to Amazon’s broader delivery portfolio, which includes two-day, next-day and same-day shipping, as well as trials of “Amazon Now”, offering delivery in approximately 30 minutes in selected areas.
