Australian discount department chain BIG W has introduced a same-day delivery offering through a partnership with DoorDash, enabling customers in participating areas to receive their orders on the day of purchase.

The service covers thousands of BIG W products, including everyday essentials and this year’s Book Week costumes.

DoorDash Australia and New Zealand sales and partnerships head Katy Rogers said: “By unlocking a faster delivery service across BIG W’s extensive range of everyday essentials, we are making it even easier for families to access the items they need when time matters most.”

The launch coincides with new BIG W research showing that 49% of Australian parents leave organising Book Week costumes until the last minute.

In Queensland, 55% of parents were identified as delaying preparations.

The research also found that 89% of parents have faced a costume-related issue linked to Book Week.

Of those, 18% said their child had asked for a different costume at short notice while 11% said they had assembled an outfit the night before from items already available at home.

BIG W chief customer officer Ryan Gracie said: “same day delivery with DoorDash is a lifeline for busy families, particularly for unexpected and last minute needs. Whether it’s a Book Week costume pivot, a rainy-day craft kit, or emergency household supplies, families can now have those items delivered directly to their doors within hours.”

The move follows BIG W’s decision in April to cut shelf prices on more than 2,000 products, in a step intended to help customers facing “cost-of-living pressures”.

Those price cuts were part of a broader pricing approach the retailer has been implementing across several product categories.

In December 2025, parent company Woolworths entered a separate partnership with DoorDash as part of plans to broaden grocery delivery options across Australia.

In a related regulatory development affecting the sector, Australia's federal government introduced a ban from July on price gouging by major supermarket chains, under new rules targeting large operators such as Coles and Woolworths.

The rules are designed to stop these retailers from pricing goods above supply costs by more than what is deemed a “reasonable margin”.
