South Korean e-commerce platform Coupang has announced the resignation of CEO Park Dae-joon in the wake of a personal data breach affecting its customers.
Parent company Coupang Inc has named Harold Rogers, currently chief administrative officer and general counsel, as interim CEO.
Dae-joon stated: “I am very sorry that we disappointed the public with the recent personal data incident. I share the grave responsibility regarding the occurrence of the leakage and how it was handled, and decided to step down from all my positions.”
Under Rogers’ interim leadership, management will focus on easing customer concerns, managing the data breach response internally and externally, and stabilising the organisation.
Coupang Inc will also actively step up to address the incident.
The company has apologised, stating: “We offer the deepest apology for the worries the recent personal data leak has caused. We will significantly enhance our information security to prevent recurrences and will do everything we can do to recover trust.”
Unauthorised access to customer information began on 24 June 2025 through overseas servers.
Suspicious activity was first picked up on 18 November, at which point Coupang identified 4,500 affected accounts.
Data exposed in the breach includes customer names, email addresses, mobile phone numbers, delivery addresses and portions of purchase histories.
Coupang stressed that payment data, credit card information and login credentials were not compromised.
The company has blocked the access route used in the incident, reinforced its internal monitoring mechanisms and brought in external experts from an independent cybersecurity company to support its response.
