Food retailer Ahold Delhaize has confirmed that Delhaize Belgium has finalised its purchase of Delfood, extending its reach in Belgium’s convenience retail segment.

Financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed.

The acquisition includes 303 Belgian outlets, covering all louis delhaize stores and locations supplied through Delfood, along with associated logistics operations and Delfood’s headquarters in Belgium.

Following completion, Delhaize’s combined estate across Belgium and Luxembourg now totals 1,109 stores.

The group added that the closing followed regulatory authorisation and the execution of the agreed divestments.

Approval was granted by the Belgian Competition Authority, subject to commitments that required the sale of six Delfood neighbourhood outlets and one Delhaize Shop & Go store.

Ahold Delhaize Europe and Indonesia CEO Claude Sarrailh said: “This acquisition represents an important step in deepening our presence in the Belgian convenience market.

“By bringing Delfood and the louis delhaize stores into the Ahold Delhaize family, we are expanding a network that is deeply rooted in local communities and backed by 150 years of heritage. I am excited about the opportunity to offer customers even more accessible, fresh and reliable shopping experiences.”

Ahold Delhaize said the transaction strengthens Delhaize’s position in the Belgian retail market, particularly in the convenience segment.

In the third quarter of 2025, Ahold Delhaize reported net sales of €22.5bn ($25.89bn), an increase of 6.1% at constant exchange rates.

The growth was mainly driven by its acquisition of Profi and higher online sales.

The retailer posted an underlying operating margin of 4.1%, up 0.3 percentage points at constant rates.
