Swedish retailer Ikea is preparing to launch a platform in the UK that will let customers buy and sell pre-owned Ikea items directly with one another.

According to The Guardian, the service is expected to launch in the coming months and will be open to members of the retailer's Ikea Family loyalty scheme.

It will let members connect locally to trade used furniture, including Billy bookcases and Poäng chairs.

Further details of the UK site are expected to be announced in due course.

The UK launch follows earlier trials of online second-hand marketplaces by Ikea in Spain and Norway, and comes five years after the company began buying and selling used items in some of its UK stores.

In January, Ikea retailer Ingka Group launched its second-hand marketplace in Sweden, Ikea's home market.

The platform is now available in five countries: Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain and Sweden.

By scaling the marketplace across multiple countries, Ingka Group aims to reach a milestone of 170,000 listings in 2026.

On the Spanish platform, Ikea provides sellers with pre-filled product descriptions and price suggestions, and offers a 15% bonus on the sale price if payment is taken as an Ikea gift card.

From January 2027, buyers in Spain will also be required to pay a 5% “protection fee” to cover costs related to the sale.

An Ikea spokesperson told The Guardian: "Our goal is to make passing on beloved Ikea pieces as seamless as possible. We are creating a trusted and vibrant space to make it quick and easy for our Ikea Family members to trade directly with one another.”

Ikea's move into the second-hand market forms part of the company's pledge to become “climate positive” by 2030, which includes a commitment to source all products from renewable, recyclable and recycled materials.

In May, Inter Ikea Group, which owns and manages the Ikea franchise system, announced plans to eliminate 850 positions worldwide as it moved to streamline operations, cut costs and reduce prices for customers.

Of the roles being removed, approximately 300 were in Sweden.
