Lidl GB plans 50-store UK expansion backed by £600m investment

Among the confirmed locations are Abbots Langley, Warrington, and Thornbury, with several set to open later this year.

Discount supermarket chain Lidl GB is set to open more than 50 new UK stores within the next year, supported by a £600m ($804.1m) capital commitment.

Described as the retailer's “most ambitious” standard store programme in the UK this year, the rollout is forecast to generate close to 2,000 new positions.

Lidl GB is part of German retail group Schwarz, which operates stores under the Lidl and Kaufland brands. 

Among the confirmed locations are Abbots Langley, Warrington, and Thornbury, with several set to open later this year.

Lidl GB CEO Ryan McDonnell said: “As we grow, we want to positively impact our British communities. We’re not just opening doors, we are unlocking regional growth.

“Our expansion translates directly into high-quality jobs and gives British suppliers the certainty they need to invest in the future. Above all, it advances our social purpose of making affordable, healthy food accessible to everyone.”

Alongside store development, the investment will support wider infrastructure.

This includes progress on a new warehouse in Leeds, which is set to become operational next year.

In London, Lidl has submitted proposals to expand and link its existing warehouse facilities at its Belvedere distribution site.

On the supply side, the company noted that roughly two-thirds of its product range is drawn from British suppliers, with longstanding ties across domestic agriculture and food manufacturing.

UK Minister for Employment Rights and Consumer Protection Kate Dearden said: “This kind of investment is exactly what we want to see from big employers - creating thousands of good jobs that pay fair wages and boost the standard of living in communities across the country.

The latest announcement follows a separate set of plans outlined in February, when Lidl confirmed it would add 16 stores in Northern Ireland by 2032, bringing its regional network there to more than 60 outlets.

That programme is projected to contribute approximately £475m annually to the Northern Ireland economy and raise the local workforce from its current level of around 1,400 to roughly 2,400.
