Japanese retail giant Seven & i Holdings plans to launch 1,300 new stores in North America by the fiscal year 2030 (FY30), as part of its revised midterm strategy, as well as to establish 1,000 additional outlets in Japan.
Its strategy includes significant investments in store expansion and enhancements.
The 7-Eleven stores'operator stated that its objective is to "satisfy changing customer needs with new formats and accelerate openings”.
This move follows the withdrawal of a $47bn acquisition offer from Canadian retailer Alimentation Couche-Tard (ACT) in July 2025.
ACT withdrew its proposal due to what it termed a lack of “constructive engagement" from the Japanese company
It follows an 11% decline in operating profit for Seven & I Holdings' convenience unit, Seven-Eleven Japan Co, in the March to May period. of 2025
Seven & i anticipates that by fiscal 2030, revenue from its convenience store segment will surpass 11.3trn yen ($76.5bn) - an increase of more than 1trn yen from fiscal 2024 due to its expansion efforts.
Seven & i operates 85,000 7-Eleven stores in 19 countries, with locations in the US under the 7-Eleven, Speedway and Stripes brands.
Seven & I chief executive Stephen Dacus reaffirmed the company's intention to take its North American business public. The listing is scheduled for the latter half of 2026.
