Supermarket chain SPAR International has partnered with Veesion to offer AI-based loss-prevention technology to SPAR-licensed operators worldwide.

Under the agreement, SPAR retailers will be able to deploy Veesion’s video detection system to help limit theft-related losses in stores.

The system works with retailers’ existing security infrastructure and issues real-time alerts when it identifies behaviour considered suspicious.

SPAR International operations head Tom Rose said: “At SPAR International, our priority is supporting our licensed country organisations with forward-thinking solutions. Veesion’s technology is a game-changer for retail security, offering an intuitive and reliable system that helps safeguard profits and enhance the shopper experience.”

SPAR International said the collaboration is designed to reinforce in-store security across its global network and to equip licensed country organisations with scalable operational tools.

According to the press statement, Veesion supplies AI-driven retail loss-prevention systems used in many outlets globally, focused on identifying and deterring shoplifting while supporting store-level security operations.

Veesion CEO and co-founder Benoit Koenig said: “We are thrilled to partner with SPAR International to bring our AI-powered solution to a global network of retailers. Together, we are redefining in-store security by making it more intuitive, effective, and accessible.”

Separately, SPAR’s regional organisations have continued to expand their store estates.

In November, SPAR Austria agreed to acquire 23 Unimarkt outlets, including 11 stores in Styria and two in Salzburg.

Furthermore, SPAR’s Italian business DESPAR Italia broadened its grocery presence during the same month with the addition of ten outlets and the reopening of two refurbished stores.

The openings spanned the DESPAR Express, DESPAR Supermarket and EUROSPAR formats.

Five DESPAR Express convenience stores were launched in Castrovillari, Corigliano-Rossano, Strongoli and Limbadi Villapiana.
