Walmart has created a new business unit, Upstream Facility Services, to provide maintenance and facilities support to companies across the US.
The move separates Walmart’s internal maintenance operation into a standalone offering for external customers, drawing on the processes and scale it uses to support thousands of Walmart and Sam’s Club sites.
The company said the service is intended to deliver quicker response times, consistent execution and real-time visibility into work being carried out.
Upstream is positioned for organisations running multi-site estates where equipment availability and reliable service are central to day-to-day performance.
Walmart Facility Services vice-president R J Zanes said: “We have spent years building one of the largest in-house facility service operations in the country. Upstream takes that capability beyond our walls, combining national scale, skilled technicians, and real-time visibility to help businesses run with fewer disruptions.”
At launch, the unit is focusing on heating, ventilation, and air conditioning, refrigeration, general maintenance, and electrical and plumbing work.
The model combines urgent callouts with preventive and predictive maintenance, with technicians located near customer locations to reduce downtime.
Walmart said that “the business is designed to respond quickly while helping customers reduce downtime, avoid repeat issues, and extend asset life”.
The business will be supported by a nationwide technician network and a dedicated training centre aimed at standardising service across locations.
Walmart said it will use its geographic density to provide “consistent” support in different markets.
Upstream also includes technology tools that give customers oversight of maintenance activity such as job progress and performance patterns.
The tools are intended to support scheduling, routing and performance tracking for operators managing work across multiple sites.
Walmart said the service is aimed at commercial customers handling complex facilities operations across distributed footprints to simplify maintenance processes, improve uptime and reduce operating costs.
Key elements include nationwide coverage, service delivered by Walmart-trained staff, end-to-end maintenance capabilities and real-time performance visibility.
