The City Square Mall is a prominent retail centre located in Singapore. It is owned and managed by City Developments (CDL), a real estate firm based in Singapore.

City Square Mall is currently undergoing a comprehensive upgrade as part of a S$50m ($37m) Asset Enhancement Initiative (AEI) to revitalise the shopping experience for customers.

It is set to become a vibrant mini-town centre with a unique concept that will offer an enriched shopping experience and a communal space where individuals can gather, engage in recreational activities, shop, and gain knowledge about eco-friendly practices.

The phased AEI commenced in September 2023 and is expected to be completed in the first half (H1) of 2025.

Location

The City Square Mall is strategically positioned at the intersection of Serangoon and 180, Kitchener Roads, on the historical grounds of Singapore’s New World Park.

It is located in proximity to Little India, one of the top five tourist destinations in the country and has a direct connection to the Farrer Park MRT station.

City Square Mall expansion details

The 11-storey City Square Mall has a net lettable area of 450,000ft2. Inaugurated in 2009, the shopping centre has established itself as Singapore’s first eco-mall and a family-oriented hub.

It accommodates nearly 200 tenants and caters to the lifestyle preferences of today’s discerning middle-income families.

The AEI will add 26,000ft2 of gross floor area to the mall and unveil a refreshed facade and an invigorating mix of tenants.

The additional space will be allocated to improve operational efficiency, layout, and functionality.

Th project aims to diversify dining options and elevate the overall experience by modernising the interiors and integrating community-based initiatives and eco-friendly features.

The retail spaces will be expanded by extending the slabs at the atriums from levels two to four.

The initial phase of the AEI introduced new food joints with  14 new food and beverage outlets across basement levels one and two.

An updated food court is being developed in basement three.

Phase two of the AEI was initiated in May 2024 and includes a comprehensive makeover and alterations. Levels one to five will be transformed to feature a redesigned atrium, a dynamic food haven, and community spaces.

Level four will soon house community spaces through the community/sports facilities scheme, which will offer a variety of programmes for youth and families.

Dining offerings

Phase one of the AEI has introduced a variety of food stalls such as Crave, EAT., Nam Kee Pau, and Ya Kun Kaya Toast in basement one.

Several food and beverage offerings were added to basement two, including fresh food kiosks like Jie Traditional Bakery, Munchi Pancakes, Taning, Towkay Fried Chicken, Fragrance Foodstuff, Hummus House by Pita & Olives, Jie Traditional Bakery, Munchi Pancakes, and others.

The Food Republic, relocated from level four to a 9,000ft2 space in basement three, opened its doors in May 2024.

The revamped Food Republic will feature local favourites such as Hjh Maimunah Mini, Li Xin Teochew Fish Ball Noodles, Thye Hong Fried Prawn Noodles, among others.

Moreover, level 4 will be transformed into Gastro Square, a 24,000ft2 food haven, that will offer a rich variety of culinary experiences, from international dishes to local specialities.

Sustainable features

The mall’s design and construction were conceptualised with environmental sustainability principles in mind.

The mall will incorporate upcycled materials into its new interior designs.

Additionally, the lift lobbies and wall finishes from basement four to level six will be adorned with eco-friendly wall murals.
