Ikea will invest approximately €130m ($145.4m) in Romania over the next three years, allocating funds to network expansion, upgrades, and retail price reductions across its Romanian operations.

Around €125m will be directed towards expansion and development projects.

This includes €55m for ten new customer touchpoints in Bucharest and other cities where Ikea already operates, including Cluj-Napoca, Iași, and Sibiu.

The retailer also plans to establish a presence in Craiova, Pitești, and Galați.

The remaining €70m will support the modernisation of Ikea’s Băneasa store in Bucharest, alongside technology, automation, and sustainability initiatives.

Work on the Băneasa site is scheduled to begin in spring 2027.

SeeNews reported that the capital expenditure plan follows an 8.6% increase in Ikea Romania sales during the 2025 financial year.

Ikea will allocate a further €4.4m to price reductions during its 2027 financial year, which runs from 1 September 2026 to 31 August 2027.

The Romanian price reductions follow Ikea’s €1.2bn European pricing initiative announced in September.

The company is also assessing opportunities to introduce smaller-format stores through partnerships with retailers and shopping centres already operating in Romania.

The initiative is consistent with Ingka Group’s strategy of expanding Ikea’s smaller-format retail model.

Ingka Group is the furniture retailer’s largest franchisee.

Ikea entered Romania in March 2007, when it opened its first store in Bucharest.

The retailer added a second Bucharest store in June 2019 following a €90m investment, before opening a third full-format store in Timișoara in June 2023 after investing more than €60m.

Ikea currently operates six planning and ordering studios and five order pickup points in Romania.

In a statement posted on LinkedIn, Ikea South East Europe CEO & CSO Ekaterina Egorova said: “After almost 20 years in Romania, we see strong long-term potential to keep growing across the country. For me, that confidence comes with a responsibility to keep adapting to the people we serve.”

Earlier this week, Ikea introduced a second-hand marketplace in the UK and Ireland, enabling Ikea Family members to buy and sell pre-owned Ikea products.
