What is Research and Development (R&D)?
This category includes organisations that have demonstrated a commitment to the research and development of new products and/or new processes. This can include discovering or creating a unique material, transferring a research or technology development to practice, improving the performance of an existing product or creating a new simulation or design tools.
The category also includes companies that have made significant investments into their R&D processes.

This research period has seen a number of retailers focusing their R&D efforts on tackling issues of digital security. One notable example is the blockchain consortium entered into by luxury brands Louis Vuitton, PRADA and Cartier. Food traceability has also been a priority in the field.
Another area which has seen notable R&D efforts is the field of automation. Various automated store concepts have been developed and introduced by companies. Automating the fulfilment process has also been a priority for retailers with many signing multi year partnerships with that purpose.
Retailers have also been trialing various services and innovative delivery options. Drone deliveries have been particularly popular, as well as various early-stage automated logistics solutions.
