Noticeably, IT jobs accounted for a 4.13% share of the global retail industry’s hiring activity in July 2021, flat growth over the last three-month average share.

According to GlobalData, IT job opportunities available at the end of July 2021 were 1.1% lower compared with the previous month.

The decrease was a result of 4.22% higher job postings as compared to job closures during the month.

Software and Web Developers, Programmers, and Testers drive retail IT hiring activity

Software and Web Developers, Programmers, and Testers with a share of 71.45% emerged as the top IT occupation in the retail hiring activity in July 2021, a 16.46% decline over the previous month. Database and Network Administrators and Architects came in second with a share of 10.4% in July 2021, up 26.3% over the previous month.

The other prominent IT roles include Miscellaneous Computer Occupations with a 6.8% share in July 2021, decline of 8.71% over the previous month, and Computer Support Specialists with a 4.66% share in July 2021 and rise of 44.76% over June 2021.

Top five retail companies by recruitment activity in July 2021

The top five companies, in terms of number of jobs as tracked by GlobalData, accounted for a combined average decline of 9.93% share in the overall IT recruitment activity of global retail industry during July 2021 over June 2021.

Amazon posted 3,828 IT jobs in July 2021 and registered a drop of 13.63% over the previous month, followed by Walmart with 446 jobs and a 1.13% rise. J Sainsbury with 364 IT jobs and Alibaba Group Holding with 246 jobs, recorded a 14.11% increase and a 3.36% growth, respectively, while CVS Health recorded a 6.04% drop with 171 job postings during July 2021.

Regional composition of IT hiring in retail industry

North America emerged as the leading region in the global retail IT hiring activity in July 2021 with a 70% share, which marked an 8.04% drop over the previous month.

Europe stood next with 14.18%, registering an 18.86% month-on-month decline. Asia-Pacific was the third leading region with a 13.49% share and a 12.31% decline over June 2021.

In the fourth place was South & Central America with a share of 1.31% and a month-on-month drop of 12.17%. Middle East & Africa stood at the bottom of the table with a share of 1.02%, registering a 25.4% increase over the previous month.
