The total number of artificial intelligence-related grants rose by 2% in Q3 2022, according to GlobalData’s whitepaper on Artificial Intelligence in Retail – Patenting Activity in Q3 2022.

Notably, the number of artificial intelligence-related patent applications in the retail industry was 1,096 in Q3 2022, versus 1,309 in the prior quarter.

The top five companies accounted for 13% of patenting activity

Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that SoftBank Group filed the most artificial intelligence patents within the retail industry in Q3 2022. The company filed 84 artificial intelligence-related patents in the quarter, compared with 9 in the previous quarter. It was followed by Coupang with 26 artificial intelligence patent filings, JOYY (12 filings), and Walmart (11 filings) in Q3 2022.

Patenting activity was driven by China with a 41% share of total patent filings

The largest share of artificial intelligence related patent filings in the retail industry in Q3 2022 was in China with 41%, followed by the US (25%) and South Korea (12%). The share represented by China was 2% higher than the 38% share it accounted for in Q2 2022.
