Notably, the number of ecommerce-related patent applications in the retail industry was 1,246 in Q2 2023, versus 2,986 in the prior quarter.

The top five companies accounted for 10% of patenting activity

Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that NEC filed the most ecommerce patents within the retail industry in Q2 2023. The company filed 32 ecommerce-related patents in the quarter, compared with 42 in the previous quarter. It was followed by Capital One Financial with 30 ecommerce patent filings, Walmart (27 filings), and eBay (18 filings) in Q2 2023.

Patenting activity was driven by the US with a 60% share of total patent filings

The largest share of ecommerce related patent filings in the retail industry in Q2 2023 was in the US with 60%, followed by China (10%) and Japan (6%). The share represented by the US was 25% higher than the 35% share it accounted for in Q1 2023.
