Notably, the number of ecommerce-related patent applications in the retail industry was 2,847 in Q2 2024, versus 3,826 in the prior quarter.
The top five companies accounted for 8% of patenting activity
Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that Toyota Motor filed the most ecommerce patents within the retail industry in Q2 2024. The company filed 55 ecommerce-related patents in the quarter, compared with 72 in the previous quarter. It was followed by Capital One Financial with 48 ecommerce patent filings, NEC (39 filings), and Coupang (39 filings) in Q2 2024.
Patenting activity was driven by the US with a 31% share of total patent filings
The largest share of ecommerce related patent filings in the retail industry in Q2 2024 was in the US with 31%, followed by Japan (9%) and China (9%). The share represented by the US was 1% higher than the 30% share it accounted for in Q1 2024.
