UK retail industry sees a rise of 9.1% in deal activity in Q3 2019

The UK retail industry saw a rise of 9.1% in overall deal activity during Q3 2019, when compared with the last four-quarter average, according to GlobalData’s deals database.

A total of 36 deals worth $1.62bn were announced in Q3 2019, compared to the last four-quarter average of 33 deals.

M&A was the leading category in the quarter with 20 deals which accounted for 55.6% of all deals.

In second place was venture financing with 11 deals, followed by private equity with five transactions, respectively accounting for 30.6% and 13.9% of overall deal activity in the country’s retail industry during the quarter.

In terms of value of deals, M&A was the leading deal category in the UK retail industry with total deals worth $989.28m, while venture financing and private equity deals totalled $500.47m and $132.97m, respectively.

The top five retail deals accounted for 95.7% of the overall value during Q3 2019.

The combined value of the top five retail deals stood at $1.55bn, against the overall value of $1.62bn recorded for the month.

The top five retail industry deals of Q3 2019 tracked by GlobalData were:

1) Marks and Spencer Group’s $989.28m acquisition of Ocado Retail

2) The $374.41m private equity deal with Liberty by Glendower Capital

3) CF Bacchus Holdings’ $121.24m private equity deal with Majestic Wine

4) The $37.59m venture financing of SCA Investments by BGF Ventures, Hargreave Hale, MMC Ventures, Perwyn and Unilever Ventures

5) Accel, Balderton Capital (UK), Christoph Kroschke HoldingKG, Daimler and Vitruvian Partners’ venture financing of carwow for $30.39m.
