The global retail industry noticed a 0.5% drop in IT hiring activity in October 2021 over the previous month, led by Amazon’s 56.56% share, according to GlobalData’s Jobs Analytics database.

The retail industry’s overall hiring activity declined 1.74% when compared with September 2021.

Noticeably, IT jobs accounted for a 4.37% share of the global retail industry’s hiring activity in October 2021, flat growth over the last three-month average share.

According to GlobalData, IT job opportunities available at the end of October 2021 were 0.04% lower when compared with the previous month.

The decrease was a result of 0.16% higher job postings as compared to job closures during the month.

Software and Web Developers, Programmers, and Testers drive retail IT hiring activity

Software and Web Developers, Programmers, and Testers with a share of 78.65% emerged as the top IT occupation in the retail hiring activity in October 2021, an 11.4% decline over the previous month. Database and Network Administrators and Architects came in second with a share of 7.8% in October 2021, down 5.99% over the previous month.

The other prominent IT roles include Miscellaneous Computer Occupations with a 6.65% share in October 2021, a decline of 13.87% over the previous month, and Computer Support Specialists with a 3.28% share in October 2021 and a drop of 10.06% over September 2021.

Top five retail companies by recruitment activity in October 2021

The top five companies, in terms of number of jobs as tracked by GlobalData, accounted for a combined average decline of 9.88% share in the overall IT recruitment activity of global retail industry during October 2021 over September 2021.

Amazon posted 5,235 IT jobs in October 2021 and registered a drop of 3.13% over the previous month, followed by Walmart with 385 jobs and an 8.11% decline. CVS Health with 188 IT jobs and JD with 175 jobs, recorded a 3.09% decline and a 42.62% drop, respectively, while Chewy recorded a 65.88% drop with 174 job postings during October 2021.

Regional composition of IT hiring in retail industry

North America emerged as the leading region in the global retail IT hiring activity in October 2021 with a 73.85% share, which marked a 5.8% drop over the previous month.

Asia-Pacific stood next with 13.3%, registering a 17.49% month-on-month decline. Europe was the third leading region with a 10.91% share and a 27.08% drop over September 2021.

In the fourth place was South & Central America with a share of 1.06% and a month-on-month drop of 30.5%. Middle East & Africa stood at the bottom of the table with a share of 0.88%, registering a 13.83% decrease over the previous month.
