The global retail industry noticed an 11.3% drop in IT hiring activity in August 2022 over the previous month, led by Amazon’s 52.56% share, according to GlobalData’s Jobs Analytics database.
The retail industry’s overall hiring activity declined 0.57% when compared with July 2022.
Noticeably, IT jobs accounted for a 4.02% share of the global retail industry’s hiring activity in August 2022, down 0.71% over the last three-month average share.
According to GlobalData, IT job opportunities available at the end of August 2022 were 18.18% lower when compared with the previous month.
The decrease was a result of 49.46% higher job postings as compared to job closures during the month.

Software and Web Developers, Programmers, and Testers with a share of 71.31% emerged as the top IT occupation in the retail hiring activity in August 2022, an 11.21% decline over the previous month. Database and Network Administrators and Architects came in second with a share of 11.16% in August 2022, down 18.05% over the previous month.
The other prominent IT roles include Miscellaneous Computer Occupations with a 7.1% share in August 2022, a growth of 11.24% over the previous month, and Computer and Information Analysts with a 5.4% share in August 2022 and a drop of 16.9% over July 2022.
Top five retail companies by recruitment activity in August 2022
The top five companies, in terms of number of jobs as tracked by GlobalData, accounted for a combined average decline of 12.73% share in the overall IT recruitment activity of global retail industry during August 2022 over July 2022.
Amazon posted 3,443 IT jobs in August 2022 and registered a drop of 15.51% over the previous month, followed by Walmart with 247 jobs and a 15.41% decline. CVS Health with 145 IT jobs and The Home Depot with 142 jobs, recorded a 31.82% growth and a 10.94% rise, respectively, while Inter IKEA Holding recorded a 31.91% rise with 124 job postings during August 2022.
Regional composition of IT hiring in retail industry
North America emerged as the leading region in the global retail IT hiring activity in August 2022 with a 71.45% share, which marked a 1.92% rise over the previous month.
Europe stood next with 15.15%, registering a 22.68% month-on-month decline. Asia-Pacific was the third leading region with a 10.87% share and a 40.91% drop over July 2022.
In the fourth place was Middle East & Africa with a share of 1.34% and a month-on-month drop of 22.81%. South & Central America stood at the bottom of the table with a share of 1.19%, registering a 4.88% decrease over the previous month.
