The global retail industry noticed a 15.3% drop in IT hiring activity in September 2022 over the previous month, led by Amazon’s 41.71% share, according to GlobalData’s Jobs Analytics database.
The retail industry’s overall hiring activity declined 0.41% when compared with August 2022.
Noticeably, IT jobs accounted for a 3.38% share of the global retail industry’s hiring activity in September 2022, down 1.05% over the last three-month average share.
According to GlobalData, IT job opportunities available at the end of September 2022 were 22.3% lower when compared with the previous month.
The decrease was a result of 51.31% higher job postings as compared to job closures during the month.

Software and Web Developers, Programmers, and Testers with a share of 68.24% emerged as the top IT occupation in the retail hiring activity in September 2022, a 12.2% decline over the previous month. Database and Network Administrators and Architects came in second with a share of 13.07% in September 2022, up 7.43% over the previous month.
The other prominent IT roles include Computer and Information Analysts with a 7.07% share in September 2022, a growth of 10.12% over the previous month, and Miscellaneous Computer Occupations with a 6.95% share in September 2022 and a drop of 12.92% over August 2022.
Top five retail companies by recruitment activity in September 2022
The top five companies, in terms of number of jobs as tracked by GlobalData, accounted for a combined average decline of 15.58% share in the overall IT recruitment activity of global retail industry during September 2022 over August 2022.
Amazon posted 2,630 IT jobs in September 2022 and registered a drop of 25.87% over the previous month, followed by Walmart with 314 jobs and a 10.8% decline. Dollar Tree with 226 IT jobs and CVS Health with 173 jobs, recorded an 11200% growth and a flat growth, respectively, while Chewy recorded a 121.13% rise with 157 job postings during September 2022.
Regional composition of IT hiring in retail industry
North America emerged as the leading region in the global retail IT hiring activity in September 2022 with a 62.05% share, which marked a 9.32% drop over the previous month.
Europe stood next with 19.28%, registering a 5.59% month-on-month decline. Asia-Pacific was the third leading region with a 15.3% share and a 12.83% drop over August 2022.
In the fourth place was Middle East & Africa with a share of 2% and a month-on-month rise of 5.88%. South & Central America stood at the bottom of the table with a share of 1.36%, registering a 12.24% decrease over the previous month.
