The global retail industry noticed a 21.9% drop in IT hiring activity in October 2022 over the previous month, led by Amazon’s 42.6% share, according to GlobalData’s Jobs Analytics database.

The retail industry’s overall hiring activity declined 7.24% when compared with September 2022.

Noticeably, IT jobs accounted for a 2.84% share of the global retail industry’s hiring activity in October 2022, down 1.1% over the last three-month average share.

According to GlobalData, IT job opportunities available at the end of October 2022 were 33.39% lower when compared with the previous month.

The decrease was a result of 62.4% higher job postings as compared to job closures during the month.

Software and Web Developers, Programmers, and Testers drive retail IT hiring activity

Software and Web Developers, Programmers, and Testers with a share of 65.18% emerged as the top IT occupation in the retail hiring activity in October 2022, a 29.54% decline over the previous month. Database and Network Administrators and Architects came in second with a share of 13.17% in October 2022, down 24.37% over the previous month.

The other prominent IT roles include Computer and Information Analysts with an 8.2% share in October 2022, a decline of 13.41% over the previous month, and Miscellaneous Computer Occupations with a 7.33% share in October 2022 and a drop of 22.47% over September 2022.

Top five retail companies by recruitment activity in October 2022

The top five companies, in terms of number of jobs as tracked by GlobalData, accounted for a combined average decline of 21.95% share in the overall IT recruitment activity of global retail industry during October 2022 over September 2022.

Amazon posted 2,047 IT jobs in October 2022 and registered a drop of 23.3% over the previous month, followed by Walmart with 335 jobs and a 4.69% growth. CVS Health with 151 IT jobs and Inter IKEA Holding with 119 jobs, recorded a 12.72% decline and a 10.53% drop, respectively, while Dollar Tree recorded a 57.52% drop with 96 job postings during October 2022.

Regional composition of IT hiring in retail industry

North America emerged as the leading region in the global retail IT hiring activity in October 2022 with a 64.33% share, which marked a 21.91% drop over the previous month.

Europe stood next with 20.33%, registering a 26.1% month-on-month decline. Asia-Pacific was the third leading region with a 12.8% share and a 38.07% drop over September 2022.

In the fourth place was South & Central America with a share of 1.42% and a month-on-month drop of 23.6%. Middle East & Africa stood at the bottom of the table with a share of 1.12%, registering a 59.7% decrease over the previous month.
