The global retail industry noticed a 4.0% drop in IT hiring activity in July 2022 over the previous month, led by Amazon’s 55.6% share, according to GlobalData’s Jobs Analytics database.

The retail industry’s overall hiring activity increased 3.1% when compared with June 2022.

Noticeably, IT jobs accounted for a 4.42% share of the global retail industry’s hiring activity in July 2022, down 0.3% over the last three-month average share.

According to GlobalData, IT job opportunities available at the end of July 2022 were 12.6% lower when compared with the previous month.

The decrease was a result of 40.54% higher job postings as compared to job closures during the month.

Software and Web Developers, Programmers, and Testers drive retail IT hiring activity

Software and Web Developers, Programmers, and Testers with a share of 72.38% emerged as the top IT occupation in the retail hiring activity in July 2022, a 16.37% decline over the previous month. Database and Network Administrators and Architects came in second with a share of 12.12% in July 2022, down 19.33% over the previous month.

The other prominent IT roles include Computer and Information Analysts with a 5.89% share in July 2022, a decline of 3.87% over the previous month, and Miscellaneous Computer Occupations with a 5.76% share in July 2022 and a drop of 21.93% over June 2022.

Top five retail companies by recruitment activity in July 2022

The top five companies, in terms of number of jobs as tracked by GlobalData, accounted for a combined average decline of 17.35% share in the overall IT recruitment activity of global retail industry during July 2022 over June 2022.

Amazon posted 3,983 IT jobs in July 2022 and registered a drop of 20.78% over the previous month, followed by Walmart with 291 jobs and a 17.56% decline. The Home Depot with 128 IT jobs and VorwerkKG with 125 jobs, recorded a 5.19% decline and a flat growth, respectively, while eBay recorded a 13.33% rise with 119 job postings during July 2022.

Regional composition of IT hiring in retail industry

North America emerged as the leading region in the global retail IT hiring activity in July 2022 with a 62.94% share, which marked a 19.51% drop over the previous month.

Europe stood next with 17.83%, registering a 10.45% month-on-month decline. Asia-Pacific was the third leading region with a 16.58% share and a 10.27% drop over June 2022.

In the fourth place was Middle East & Africa with a share of 1.55% and a month-on-month drop of 6.72%. South & Central America stood at the bottom of the table with a share of 1.1%, registering a 1.28% increase over the previous month.
