
The global retail industry noticed a 5.2% drop in IT hiring activity in June 2022 over the previous month, led by Amazon’s 57.77% share, according to GlobalData’s Jobs Analytics database.
The retail industry’s overall hiring activity declined 4.98% when compared with May 2022.
Noticeably, IT jobs accounted for a 4.83% share of the global retail industry’s hiring activity in June 2022, up 0.05% over the last three-month average share.
According to GlobalData, IT job opportunities available at the end of June 2022 were 5.38% lower when compared with the previous month.
The decrease was a result of 21.53% higher job postings as compared to job closures during the month.
Software and Web Developers, Programmers, and Testers drive retail IT hiring activity
Software and Web Developers, Programmers, and Testers with a share of 73.9% emerged as the top IT occupation in the retail hiring activity in June 2022, a 14.53% decline over the previous month. Database and Network Administrators and Architects came in second with a share of 10.6% in June 2022, down 16.01% over the previous month.
The other prominent IT roles include Miscellaneous Computer Occupations with a 6.44% share in June 2022, a decline of 2.24% over the previous month, and Computer and Information Analysts with a 5.38% share in June 2022 and a drop of 26.91% over May 2022.
Top five retail companies by recruitment activity in June 2022
The top five companies, in terms of number of jobs as tracked by GlobalData, accounted for a combined average decline of 8.14% share in the overall IT recruitment activity of global retail industry during June 2022 over May 2022.
Amazon posted 4,318 IT jobs in June 2022 and registered a drop of 10.41% over the previous month, followed by Walmart with 311 jobs and a 15.72% decline. REWE Group with 161 IT jobs and CVS Health with 140 jobs, recorded a flat growth and a 10.26% drop, respectively, while Chewy recorded a 19.88% drop with 137 job postings during June 2022.
Regional composition of IT hiring in retail industry
North America emerged as the leading region in the global retail IT hiring activity in June 2022 with a 76.42% share, which marked a 6.82% drop over the previous month.
Europe stood next with 13.69%, registering a 23.83% month-on-month decline. Asia-Pacific was the third leading region with an 8.24% share and a 47.53% drop over May 2022.
In the fourth place was Middle East & Africa with a share of 1.2% and a month-on-month drop of 16.67%. South & Central America stood at the bottom of the table with a share of 0.44%, registering a 48.44% decrease over the previous month.
