The global retail industry noticed a 1.2% rise in IT hiring activity in September 2021 over the previous month, led by Amazon’s 50.71% share, according to GlobalData’s Jobs Analytics database.

The retail industry’s overall hiring activity increased 1.49% when compared with August 2021.

Noticeably, IT jobs accounted for a 4.22% share of the global retail industry’s hiring activity in September 2021, down 0.14% over the last three-month average share.

According to GlobalData, IT job opportunities available at the end of September 2021 were flat when compared with the previous month.

The increase was a result of 0.01% lower job postings as compared to job closures during the month.

Software and Web Developers, Programmers, and Testers drive retail IT hiring activity

Software and Web Developers, Programmers, and Testers with a share of 78.9% emerged as the top IT occupation in the retail hiring activity in September 2021, a 2.34% growth over the previous month. Database and Network Administrators and Architects came in second with a share of 7.56% in September 2021, down 2.8% over the previous month.

The other prominent IT roles include Miscellaneous Computer Occupations with a 7% share in September 2021, a decline of 8.66% over the previous month, and Computer Support Specialists with a 3.21% share in September 2021 and a drop of 0.64% over August 2021.

Top five retail companies by recruitment activity in September 2021

The top five companies, in terms of number of jobs as tracked by GlobalData, accounted for a combined average growth of 15.82% share in the overall IT recruitment activity of global retail industry during September 2021 over August 2021.

Amazon posted 4,893 IT jobs in September 2021 and registered a rise of 4.13% over the previous month, followed by Chewy with 510 jobs and a 295.35% growth. Walmart with 407 IT jobs and Dollar Tree with 319 jobs, recorded a 23.93% decline and a 10533.33% rise, respectively, while JD recorded a 61.38% rise with 305 job postings during September 2021.

Regional composition of IT hiring in retail industry

North America emerged as the leading region in the global retail IT hiring activity in September 2021 with a 72.86% share, which marked a 12.07% rise over the previous month.

Asia-Pacific stood next with 13.18%, registering a 30.19% month-on-month decline. Europe was the third leading region with a 12% share and a 14.92% drop over August 2021.

In the fourth place was South & Central America with a share of 1.15% and a month-on-month rise of 21.98%. Middle East & Africa stood at the bottom of the table with a share of 0.81%, registering a 32.2% increase over the previous month.
