The global retail industry noticed a 2.2% rise in IT hiring activity in March 2022 over the previous month, led by Amazon’s 61.47% share, according to GlobalData’s Jobs Analytics database.

The retail industry’s overall hiring activity increased 7.85% when compared with February 2022.

Noticeably, IT jobs accounted for a 5.75% share of the global retail industry’s hiring activity in March 2022, down 0.08% over the last three-month average share.

According to GlobalData, IT job opportunities available at the end of March 2022 were 10.35% lower when compared with the previous month.

The decrease was a result of 29.26% higher job postings as compared to job closures during the month.

Software and Web Developers, Programmers, and Testers drive retail IT hiring activity

Software and Web Developers, Programmers, and Testers with a share of 80.51% emerged as the top IT occupation in the retail hiring activity in March 2022, a 1.33% growth over the previous month. Database and Network Administrators and Architects came in second with a share of 7.65% in March 2022, up 1.45% over the previous month.

The other prominent IT roles include Miscellaneous Computer Occupations with a 6.3% share in March 2022, a growth of 0.27% over the previous month, and Computer Support Specialists with a 2.77% share in March 2022 and a drop of 10.63% over February 2022.

Top five retail companies by recruitment activity in March 2022

The top five companies, in terms of number of jobs as tracked by GlobalData, accounted for a combined average growth of 2.97% share in the overall IT recruitment activity of global retail industry during March 2022 over February 2022.

Amazon posted 7,286 IT jobs in March 2022 and registered a drop of 0.9% over the previous month, followed by Walmart with 598 jobs and a 43.75% growth. Chewy with 252 IT jobs and Inter IKEA Holding with 228 jobs, recorded a 46.51% growth and a 35.71% rise, respectively, while CVS Health recorded a 4.39% drop with 196 job postings during March 2022.

Regional composition of IT hiring in retail industry

North America emerged as the leading region in the global retail IT hiring activity in March 2022 with a 67.36% share, which marked a 9.24% rise over the previous month.

Asia-Pacific stood next with 15.3%, registering a 19.06% month-on-month decline. Europe was the third leading region with a 15.2% share and a 5.8% drop over February 2022.

In the fourth place was Middle East & Africa with a share of 1.24% and a month-on-month rise of 4.26%. South & Central America stood at the bottom of the table with a share of 0.9%, registering a 21.9% decrease over the previous month.
