The global retail industry noticed a 2.9% rise in IT hiring activity in December 2020 over the previous month, led by Amazon’s 37.02% share, according to GlobalData’s Jobs Analytics database.

The retail industry’s overall hiring activity declined 6.62% when compared with November 2020.

Noticeably, IT jobs accounted for a 1.67% share of the global retail industry’s hiring activity in December 2020, up 0.18% over the last three-month average share.

According to GlobalData, IT job opportunities available at the end of December 2020 were 1.79% higher compared with the previous month.

The increase was a result of 4% lower job postings as compared to job closures during the month.

Software and Web Developers, Programmers, and Testers drive retail IT hiring activity

Software and Web Developers, Programmers, and Testers with a share of 69.98% emerged as the top IT occupation in the retail hiring activity in December 2020, an 8.43% increase over the previous month. Miscellaneous Computer Occupations came in second with a share of 10.35% in December 2020, up 7.41% over the previous month.

The other prominent IT roles include Computer Support Specialists with an 8.02% share in December 2020, an increase of 72.78% over the previous month, and Database and Network Administrators and Architects with a 7.55% share in December 2020 and a drop of 7.41% over November 2020.

 

Top five retail companies by recruitment activity in December 2020

The top five companies, in terms of number of jobs as tracked by GlobalData, accounted for a combined average increase of 11.09% share in the overall IT recruitment activity of global retail industry during December 2020 over November 2020.

Amazon posted 1,348 IT jobs in December 2020 and registered a rise of 12.05% over the previous month, followed by Woolworths Holdings with 485 jobs and a 1.68% rise. Walmart with 194 IT jobs and J Sainsbury with 188 jobs, recorded a 12.14% increase and a 12.56% drop, respectively, while CVS Health recorded a 115.19% growth with 170 job postings during December 2020.

Regional composition of IT hiring in retail industry

North America emerged as the leading region in the global retail IT hiring activity in December 2020 with a 59.46% share, which marked a 10.18% growth over the previous month.

Asia-Pacific stood next with 22.71% share, registering a 16.15% month-on-month increase. Europe was the third leading region with a 15.9% share and a 4.93% decline over November 2020.

In the fourth place was Middle East & Africa with a share of 1.04% and a month-on-month growth of 35.71%. South & Central America stood at the bottom of the table with a share of 0.88%, registering a 52.38% increase over the previous month.
