US food and drug retailer Albertsons Companies is trialling an automated and contactless grocery PickUp kiosk to offer easy services to customers especially amid the pandemic.

Developed by automated pickup solutions provider Cleveron, the automated, temperature-controlled kiosk provides a contactless pickup experience.

Customers can select “Kiosk PickUp” option and can pick up their groceries, robotically delivered to the front of the unit within the 2-hr time slots.

The introduction is in line with the company’s commitment to streamline service and is part of the company’s ongoing expansion into its eCommerce business.

Albertsons EVP and chief customer & digital officer Chris Rupp said: “We are supercharging our digital and omnichannel offerings to serve customers however they want, whenever they want.

“This innovative and contactless PickUp kiosk makes it even easier for customers to shop with us in a way that is convenient for them.”

Currently, the kiosk is piloted at Chicago Jewel-Osco stores and the company is planning to install a second unit at a Bay Area Safeway.

The unit features two temperature zones regular and a deep freeze where customer’s order can be stored.

Full-service technology partner Telaid installed the kiosk.

In October, PickUp lockers were installed at most of Albertsons Companies’ Jewel-Osco stores.

The company also offers Delivery and Drive Up & Go options through its websites and apps.
