US e-commerce giant Amazon has unveiled an advanced AI model designed to refine its Just Walk Out checkout technology, offering more accurate and efficient shopping experiences.
Launched in 2018, Just Walk Out enables customers at physical stores to purchase items without the need for traditional checkouts.
The upgraded Just Walk Out AI technology is set to deliver quicker receipt generation for customers, addressing complex variables such as camera obstructions and varying lighting conditions.
The latest Just Walk Out multi-modal foundation model improves accuracy by leveraging the previous transformer-based machine learning models and applies them to physical stores.
The upgraded system works a lot faster than earlier iterations and is easier for retailers to install. Shoppers simply supply their payment information, credit card or mobile wallet upon entry to a store, then shop and leave.
The technology can now process sensor data in unison rather than sequentially and can assess multiple inputs such as cameras and weight sensors to accurately identify the items a shopper selects.

By GlobalDataThe AI system employs continuous self-learning and transformer technology – a neural network architecture that processes sensor data into outputs, such as receipts for checkout-free shopping.
This reduces the need for frequent model retraining, even in new shopping environments, as the system continuously adapts and learns.
To facilitate Just Walk Out’s ongoing learning, the system is trained on a 3D map of the store, understanding the placement of fixtures and products.
It uses an image catalogue of store merchandise to visually identify items, allowing it to recognise shopper behaviour even when faced with store layout changes.
This technology is currently implemented in 170 third-party locations across the US, UK, Australia and Canada, including airports, stadiums and hospitals.
AWS Applications Just Walk Out technology vice-president Jon Jenkins said: “We will launch more Just Walk Out stores in 2024 than any year prior, more than doubling the number of third-party stores with the technology this year. As we scale, the system will continue to learn from everyday shopping scenarios and raise the bar for accuracy and convenience, delivering the benefits of AI to retailers and customers around the world.”
In July 2024 Amazon announced plans to expand its Just Walk Out technology to the O2, a premier live entertainment and retail venue in London, UK, by the end of the year.
