US-based e-commerce giant Amazon has opened its first same-day fulfilment centre in Massachusetts, which can make deliveries ‘within hours’.

The facility is located at 1025 Elm Street in Bridgewater and covers an area of around 155,000ft².

Amazon’s sub same-day buildings serve as mini-fulfilment centres and are designed to offer same-day deliveries of hundreds of thousands of items.

Amazon Prime members in the Greater Boston area can order from up to three million items that are marked ‘Today by’ and ‘Overnight by’, receiving deliveries within three to five hours of ordering.

Product categories include baby, beauty and health, kitchen and dining, electronics and pet supplies.

Customers will also have the option to choose a suitable slot in which to receive their delivery.

In addition to offering an enhanced shopping experience, the faster delivery speeds are intended to help Amazon reduce its carbon emissions.

Amazon New England operation spokesperson Caitlin McLaughlin said: “We want you to be able to get what you want and need, when you want and need it.

“With our new fulfilment centre in Bridgewater, you can click purchase and have your order land on your doorstep within hours.”

Amazon claims that the Bridgewater facility has created ‘hundreds’ of part-time and full-time jobs in the local area.

In addition, it allows more Amazon Flex delivery partners to fulfil same-day deliveries on behalf of the company.

Bridgewater facility site leader Andrew Schwarz said: “We are creating hundreds of new jobs with great benefits and improving the experience for customers here in Massachusetts.”

The facility delivered its first package in January this year, the same month in which Amazon launched its first-ever physical apparel store.

The Amazon Style store concept is intended to provide a ‘seamless’ and ‘personalised’ shopping experience.

It will offer women’s and men’s apparel, shoes and other accessories from various brands.
