British co-operative group Co-op relaunched its Chelston store in Torquay, southwest England, on 22 March 2024, following a six-week refurbishment programme.

The 2,700ft² store on Walnut Road in Chelston employs 18 people.

The revamped Co-op now features an in-store bakery, hot food options, a Costa Coffee Express machine, customer car parking and a free ATM.

Additional services include parcel collection through Amazon Lockers and DPD, and online grocery delivery through Deliveroo, Just Eat and Uber Eats.

The store’s new look emphasises fresh, healthy produce, meal ideas and everyday essentials.

It caters to a range of dietary and other needs with food-to-go, Fairtrade products, chilled beers, wines, flowers, ready meals and pizzas.

A soft plastic recycle unit enables the community to recycle items such as bread bags, yogurt pots, crisp packets, ready meal lids, biscuit wrappers and pet food pouches.

All of Co-op’s own food packaging can therefore be recycled either through local authority kerbside collections or the in-store recycling unit.

Co-op store manager Darren Scott said: “The whole team is delighted to have had the opportunity to invest in transforming Chelston’s Co-op – the store really has a great look and fresh new layout.

“We aim to operate at the heart of local life and we have worked to develop the range, choice and added services to create a compelling offer to serve our community conveniently, with a focus on delivering member value so that the people who own our business, our member-owners, benefit every time they shop.”

In February 2024 Co-op unveiled a new convenience store in Wrotham Road, Welling.
