British consumer co-operative group Co-op is advancing its technological capabilities by adopting a cloud-first strategy through an expanded partnership with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS).

The strategic move supports the group’s business growth and sustainability goals.

Co-op has been partnering with TCS for more than 14 years to transform its retail, core systems and franchise operations.

These initiatives have enabled the retail chain to expedite product launches, diversify revenue and respond swiftly to evolving business scenarios.

The enhanced partnership will transition Co-op from a conventional data centre model to a TCS Enterprise Cloud-powered fully managed, scalable cloud environment.

The shift lays the groundwork for future capabilities and growth while reducing energy consumption and advancing the group’s sustainability objectives.

Co-op chief digital and information officer Rob Elsey said: “We are delighted to extend our strategic partnership with TCS in enabling us to meet Co-op’s business objectives and serving and supporting our member-owners who are at the very heart of our business.

“They have been a great partner, aligned with our growth priorities and future-proofed our infrastructure as we set on the course for continued future expansion – supporting change and transformation in how we work as a business and in our cloud journey.”

Co-op runs 2,400 food stores and supplies products to 5,000 stores.

The group has a workforce of 60,000.

Co-op recently re-inforced its supermarket security by installing 200 secure till kiosks, locked cabinets for spirits and artificial intelligence technology to supervise self-checkouts.
