British co-operative group Co-op has partnered with US-based ridesharing giant Uber to launch a rapid delivery service for grocery products in the UK.

The partnership will enable shoppers to order via the Uber Eats mobile app from around 1,000 Co-op food stores by the end of next month.

A phased roll-out will start this week, with stores offering more than 6,000 products for delivery in a minimum of 30 minutes.

Co-op said the service is available for full grocery shops and on-demand top-ups, as well as forgotten items, meal ideas and treats.

Groceries offered include the retailer’s own brand and Irresistible range, with all its meat being fully British-sourced.

The service will also provide fresh products, fruit and vegetables and products from popular brands, among other items.

Co-op e-commerce director Chris Conway said: “As a convenience retailer, we know the ability to pop into a local Co-op will always be important to customers, but we also know that fast and flexible options online are important to shoppers too.

“So by using our stores located in the heart of communities to provide rapid home deliveries, we can meet customer needs and make shopping easier, however, wherever and whenever our Members and customers choose to shop with us.”

Uber Eats UK head of commerce Alex Troughton said: “We are delighted to be partnering with Co-op, one of the most popular grocery retailers in the UK.

“Our mission is to be the platform of choice across the UK, and with this partnership, more customers will be able to order all their grocery needs at the touch of the button.

“So whether you are in need of some dinner inspiration or looking to do the weekly shop, Uber Eats and Co-op have got you covered.”

Last month, Co-op and autonomous delivery vehicle manufacturer Starship Technologies extended their autonomous robot delivery service in the UK.
