Lidl GB, the popular discount supermarket chain, has revealed plans for a significant transformation affecting all its stores across the UK.
This move comes after a successful trial conducted in more than 35 locations, including Epsom and Tooting, where the company tested changes to how prices are displayed.
The key aspect of this transformation is the adoption of Electronic Shelf Labels (ESL), which replaces traditional paper price tags.
Lidl estimates that this switch will result in a reduction of more than 206 tonnes of carbon annually, primarily through paper and packaging reductions, alongside a significant decrease in ink usage.
Positive customer response and operational efficiency
During the trial period, which began in September 2022, Lidl surveyed shoppers and found that more than two-thirds of them did not notice the change in how prices were displayed.
This underscores the seamless integration of the new technology into the shopping experience.

By GlobalDataAdditionally, the transition to ESL has led to operational efficiency gains, as it reduces the time spent by staff on manual tasks such as checking and updating paper price tags.
This allows employees to focus more on assisting customers and maintaining store shelves.
Gradual rollout across all stores
Lidl GB plans to gradually introduce ESL into specific sections of each of its stores in the coming months, with the full rollout expected to be completed by the end of the year.
This phased approach aims to ensure a smooth transition while bringing the benefits of the new technology to all customers across the country.
