She will replace the current interim leadership structure led by Meghan Frank and André Maestrini.

The pair will remain interim co-CEO until O’Neill takes up the post, after which they are set to return to their previous senior management positions.

Frank and Maestrini are expected to work alongside O’Neill and the wider leadership team after the appointment to support day-to-day operations and the handover process.

Commenting on her appointment, O’Neill said: “As I step into the CEO role in September, my job will be to build on that foundation – to accelerate product breakthroughs, deepen the brand’s cultural relevance, and unlock growth in markets around the world. I am humbled by the opportunity and energised by what the team is already building.”

O’Neill joins Lululemon with more than three decades of experience in performance clothing, footwear and sport, including more than 25 years at Nike.

During her time at Nike, she was part of a period in which the business expanded from more than $9bn in revenue to over $45bn globally.

Her responsibilities included product development, brand strategy, operations and consumer engagement worldwide.

Most recently, she held the position of president, consumer, product & brand at Nike.

In that role, she oversaw the company’s global consumer and product organisation, covering product creation, design, merchandising, as well as brand and sports marketing.

Her remit also included efforts to shorten product development cycles and improve results in categories including football and running.

Before that, as president, consumer & marketplace, she managed operations in more than 170 countries with full profit and loss responsibility and led the global commercial organisation.

Earlier in her career, O’Neill worked in advertising at Foote, Cone & Belding and was director of marketing for the Dockers brand at Levi Strauss & Co.

She also sits on the boards of Spotify Technology, Hyatt Hotels and Lithia & Driveway.

Lululemon board of directors’ executive chairman Marti Morfitt added: “We selected Heidi because of the breadth of her experience, her demonstrated success delivering breakthrough ideas and initiatives at scale, and her ability to be a knowledgeable change and growth agent.”
