Romania-based supermarket chain Zanfir has been acquired by Mega Image, which is owned by Ahold Delhaize.
Mega Image has received approval from the Romanian Competition Council for the transaction, which is expected to strengthen its presence in the Vrancea region.
The deal will add ten Zanfir stores to the Mega Image’s supermarket network. These outlets will be converted into Mega Image and Shop & Go stores.
Mega Image brand president Mircea Moga said: “The acquisition of the most important player in the Vrancea market is part of our strategy to develop and expand into new territories.
“We look forward to meeting our new customers and offer them our range of quality products, inspiration and new shopping experiences.”
Founded in 1995, Mega Image operates supermarkets under the Mega Image, Shop & Go and Gusturi Românești brands. It currently operates 677 stores across the country.

By GlobalDataAccording to the Ahold Delhaize website, the supermarket chain has remodelled some of its stores by adding specialist wine department, Wine Gallery, and the Equilibrium Health & Wellness section to offer food and non-food products, including organic and vegan items.
Last February, Mega Image opened a new concept store at Cobalcescu 45 in Bucharest to offer a range of grocery items and gourmet cuisine to customers.
The store also features Pane & Pomodoro, a first Neapolitan pizzeria in the country that makes pizzas using ingredients from the Naples and Campania regions.
