Amazon India has listed its US-based Amazon Export Sales unit as a seller in its website.
The overseas seller caters to several segments such as fashion, lifestyle and electronics.
This move comes after Amazon had launched its Global Store in India.
As the unit is registered in the US, the transactions would be processed outside India and was not violating the country's Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), Amazon claimed.
"Amazon has a high bar for compliance with laws of the land and Amazon.in is in compliance with all applicable laws.”
According to the new government rules, overseas e-commerce companies can only function as technology marketplaces that link buyers and sellers and are not permitted to sell anything directly on their own.
An Amazon India spokesperson was quoted by Economictimes.indiatimes.com as saying: “Amazon.in enables sellers (domestic and international) to list their products for Indian customers. Amazon Exports Sales is also a listed seller on Amazon.
“Amazon Exports Sales is an exporter of products and therefore the mention of custom duties in their listings. Amazon has a high bar for compliance with laws of the land and Amazon.in is in compliance with all applicable laws.”
The Global Store sells products unavailable in India.
