Amazon is planning to open a new robotics fulfilment centre in Thornton, Colorado, US.
The new Amazon Robotics facility will be the first of its type in the state and create more than 1,500 new full-time associate roles.
To be spread over an area of more than 855,000ft², the new facility will use Amazon Robotics technologies, vision systems, and other software and mechanical innovations, Amazon stated.
The retailer already operates a fulfilment centre in the region.
The employees at Amazon Robotics facility will pick, pack and ship smaller customer items such as books, electronics and toys.
Colorado governor John Hickenlooper said: “Our talented workforce will have the opportunity to learn new, valuable skills with Amazon and work alongside innovative technology.
“We look forward to the great jobs with competitive wages and comprehensive benefits that Amazon will bring to the state.”
Amazon Robotics is involved in automating fulfilment centre operations in order to meet consumer demands in the e-commerce segment.
It employs various methods of robotic technology, including autonomous mobile robots, control software, language perception, power management, computer vision, depth sensing, machine learning, object recognition and semantic understanding of commands.
