Amazon plans to open its seventh Texas fulfillment centre in Houston, US.
The company currently employs more than 10,000 full-time hourly associates at its five operating Texas fulfillment centres.
It plans to create 1,000 more full-time jobs with the new Houston location.
Amazon presently operates fulfillment centres in Coppell, Haslet, Dallas, Fort Worth, and Schertz, with an upcoming facility in San Marcos currently under construction.
Amazon’s vice-president of North American operations Akash Chauhan said: “With Houston’s legacy as a pioneer in innovation and exploration, we are proud to become a member of the community with the announcement of a new fulfillment centre in the region.
Texas lieutenant governor Dan Patrick said: "Texas is committed to maintaining a strong business climate that allows companies to prosper, innovate and expand. I predict this will not be the last Amazon facility we will see here."
Amazon's employees at the 855,000ft² Houston fulfillment centre will pick, pack and ship smaller customer items such as books, electronics and toys.
