French home-improvement and gardening retailer Leroy Merlin has firmed up plans to increase its retail presence in Romania by acquiring three Baumax units and one Obi store.

The two retailers would exit the Romanian market, with falling sales recorded in the region, reports local Wall-street.ro.

As part of the expansion plan, Leroy Merlin will open a new 13,000m ² store in Craiova this June.

Separately, the retailer is looking to develop its own projects in key locations in Bucharest and across the country.

Established on the outskirts of major towns and cities, Leroy Merlin stores are large centres providing self-service and sales assisted services. Its business is centred around six main sectors: DIY, building, gardening, sanitary equipment, renewable energy, and interior decoration

Presently, it operates more than 300 home improvement stores in 13 countries.
