Swedish home furnishings retailer Ikea has plans to open an outlet in Norfolk, Virginia, US.

Ikea has submitted a plan to the city authorities. Once this is approved, the retailer aims to begin construction of the proposed Norfolk store next year.

According to the proposal, the Ikea store will be located centrally within the Hampton Roads area, and eight miles east of downtown Norfolk.

The 331,000ft² outlet will be built on 19 acres and feature 1,000 parking spaces.

The proposed store will feature almost 10,000 designed items, 50 room-settings, three model home interiors, a children’s play area, and a 450-seat restaurant serving Swedish specialties and American items.

More than 500 jobs are expected to be created during the construction phase while the outlet will generate approximately 250 in-store positions.
