Online retailer Rakuten Deutschland has expanded its partnership with technology provider Wirecard, by selecting the latter's additional payment methods in the process.

A division of Japanese firm Rakuten, Rakuten Deutschland currently offers a retail platform for more than 7,000 suppliers and over 22 million products.

The retailer also manages processes such as receipt of order and payment for all connected merchants.

Rakuten Deutschland chief product officer Frank Hümmer said: "We have already been relying upon Wirecard's payment offers for about ten years now.

"By offering additional services, merchants and consumers can benefit at the same time, as now even more international payment processes and risk management processes are available.

The expansion of the partnership will allow the retailer to enable merchant payments through JCB and Diners credit cards, as well as the safety features such as J Secure and Diners' ProtectBuy.

Wirecard uses a standardised interface to provide merchants access to its payment processing and fraud protection system.
