Tesco is to issue fines of £70 for vehicles incorrectly parked in spaces for disabled people and parents.

Staff will carry handheld gadgets with a smartphone app to identify illegal parking.

This technology has already been trialled at 81 supermarkets, reported liverpoolecho.co.uk.

The handheld gadgets will be linked to the government's DVLA driver database. This will allow the chain's parking executives to determine a genuine Blue Badge holder.

"This makes parking at Tesco fairer for everyone."

This move has been taken following increasing complaints from disabled people and parents who report misuse of the parking bay allocated for them.

Tesco's car park operations manager Cat Parkinson was quoted by Telegraph.co.uk as saying: “The subject of living with disability is close to my heart.
