British supermarket chain Sainsbury’s has selected Cloud-based payment company Checkout.com to modernise its payment infrastructure.
The retailer aims to provide a fast and easy shopping experience for customers by introducing in-app payment options to its SmartShop mobile app.
Using the new Checkout.com-enabled SmartShop functionality, Sainsbury’s customers can pay on their smartphones without visiting a till.
The technology is initially being implemented across the retailer’s ‘scan-and-go’ SmartShop stores, with plans to expand it to Argos and Habitat stores in the coming months.
Sainsbury’s customer and data chief technology officer Helen Hunter said: “Our priority is providing our customers with a smooth and frictionless shopping experience.
“We’re excited to roll out this new capability, made possible by Checkout.com’s technology, as we redefine an omnichannel checkout experience for customers with SmartShop.

Checkout.com said the new till-free technology marks the first stage of a long-term partnership between the two companies.
The SmartShop functionality will be powered by Checkout.com’s payments platform, which facilitates transactions via Apple Pay, Google Pay and other digital wallets.
Sainsbury’s will also use another Checkout.com product, ProcessOut, as a payment orchestration platform.
Once fully rolled out, the technology will allow Sainsbury’s to access online orders in real time.
Checkout.com chief marketing officer Leela Srinivasan said: “Our technology enables us to keep innovating with merchants to deliver new seamless checkout experiences for consumers and push the boundaries of omnichannel.
