Walmart’s consumables and health and wellness unit is set to launch the DisposeRx opioid disposal solution to combat opioid abuse and misuse.
Encased in a small packet, the solution enables patients to dispose the leftover medications when emptied into a pill bottle with warm water.
According to the data from Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration and the National Institute of Drug Abuse, more than 65% of people misusing prescription opioids procure them from family and friends.
The disposable solution is provided in all Walmart pharmacies across the US, along with patient counselling regarding proper opioid usage with an awareness brochure, at the time of filling the opioid prescription.
Walmart US consumables and health and wellness executive vice-president Marybeth Hays said: “The health and safety of our patients is a critical priority, that’s why we’re taking an active role in fighting our nation’s opioid issue – an issue that has affected so many families and communities across America.
“While this issue requires many resources to solve, we are confident this unique, easy-to-use disposal solution, DisposeRx, will make a meaningful impact on the lives of many.”
