Multinational retail corporation Walmart has unveiled an ambitious plan to expand its retail presence in the US by opening or converting more than 150 stores in the five years up to 2028.

Each new opening is expected to bring hundreds of jobs offering benefits such as competitive paid time off, flexible scheduling and tuition-free college from day one.

Walmart US president and CEO John Furner said: “I’m excited to say the first two new stores under this initiative, both Neighbourhood Markets, are set to open later this spring in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida and Atlanta, Georgia.”

“We’re also finalising construction plans on 12 new projects we intend to start this year, along with converting one of our smaller locations to a Walmart Supercentre.”

During 2024 Walmart also plans to remodel 650 stores across 47 states and Puerto Rico, creating tens of thousands of jobs.

The new and remodelled stores will embody Walmart’s Store of the Future concept, with enhanced layouts, expanded product selections and advanced technology.

Designed to make shopping more convenient and enjoyable, the concept has already been well-received in existing locations.

With focus on sustainability, the new facilities will incorporate energy-efficient equipment and lighting, lower impact refrigerants and other eco-friendly features.

The retailer is also developing a nationwide network of affordable electric vehicle (EV) fast-charging stations to encourage EV ownership among its customers and associates.

John Furner stated: “These new and remodelled stores will better enable us to meet and exceed customer expectations whether in a store, online at Walmart.com, or through one of our mobile apps.”

In January 2024 the company showcased new artificial intelligence (AI)-powered tools at the Consumer Electronics Show 2024 in Las Vegas.
