Australian supermarket chain Woolworths has introduced a QR code payment system for its Everyday Rewards mobile app.

Shoppers at Woolworths and Big W stores across Australia can pay for their groceries using a QR code linked to a digital wallet on their mobile device.

The Everyday Pay from Everyday Rewards digital wallet was developed by the Woolworths’ payment arm, Wpay, and is part of the company’s strategy to digitalise its payments across the country.

Customers can use the service by downloading the Everyday Rewards app and linking it to their credit, debit or gift card.

They can scan the QR code available on the payment terminals at checkouts, which will prompt the app to automatically deduct the transaction from the registered account.

In addition to offering an alternative way to pay, the QR code system allows customers to earn reward points using the digital wallet.

The digital wallet is available in all Woolworths Supermarkets, Woolworths Metro and BIG W across Australia.

Woolworths Everyday managing director Hannah Ross said: “At Woolworths Group, we’re always looking for new ways to make shopping for your everyday needs that little bit easier.

“We know speed, ease and contactless payment at the checkout is important to our customers as they lead increasingly busy lives.

“Everyday Pay from Everyday Rewards has been designed with this need top of mind.

“By integrating the ease of QR code payments, with our Everyday Rewards app, we can save customers time at the checkout and help ensure they never miss a rewards point again.”

Woolworths’ Everyday Rewards customer loyalty programme has more than 13 million members across Australia and is used by one million customers every week.

In August last year, Woolworths partnered with food delivery platform Uber Eats to offer same-hour grocery deliveries across Australia.
